Which is Right for You?  Buying New or Old?

There are many decisions that you will have to make when it comes to buying a home.  One that many potential homeowners’ have to consider is whether to buy a new home or an old home.  There is no right or wrong answer or even a one size fits all answer.  There are pros and cons of both to consider when making the decision, however, that will help you come to the best decision for you.

You have to expect that when buying an old house it is going to most likely need some repairs if not immediately in the nearer future.  These repairs can consist of anything from a new roof, new appliances, carpet replacement, and much more.  When buying an old house you have to make sure you are prepared to deal with these repairs sooner rather than later.  The flipside is that older homes usually have better construction quality and are simply built better than newer homes.  Just remember that if you purchase an older home in a historic district you will most likely be restricted by what you can do to the property as you will be required to maintain the character of the home.

Assuming that the builder and developer are reputable and have done a good job it will be later rather than sooner you will have to make repairs if you buy a new home.  This would allow more time to save up money for those repairs if needed.  It is important, though, to do your research of the builder and developer of a new home to ensure the house you buy will be quality work.  You can do this by talking to homeowners that already own a home built by the same people.  Your realtor can also probably provide some insight.

Whether you buy old or new you want to make sure you understand the pros and cons that come with each.
